FAQ

  • Do I need planning permission for a Garden Room?
In most cases you will not need planning permission to erect a garden room – if the eaves height is under 2.5 and it doesn’t project beyond the front wall of your house. In general, adding a stand-alone, single storey garden room to the rear or side garden is usually allowed under Permitted Development. It is important to be a minimum of 500mm away from any fence boundary and also not exceed 50% of the garden space. However, we recommend that you check the Government’s Planning Portal online before starting any work on a garden pod to ensure you comply with the rules. The planning portal refers to garden rooms as outbuildings.
  • What is a garden room and how is it different from a traditional conservatory?
A garden room is a self-contained, detached structure that is designed to blend in with your garden and provide extra living space. It differs from a traditional conservatory in that it is not attached to the main house and typically has more insulation and features to make it suitable for year-round use.
  • What are the benefits of having a garden room?
Garden rooms provide a range of benefits, including extra living space, increased property value, and a versatile and flexible use of space. They can be used for anything from a home office or gym to a playroom or guest accommodation.
  • How long does it take to install a garden room?
The installation time for a garden room will depend on various factors, including the size of the structure and the complexity of the design. However, most garden rooms can be installed in just a few days.
  • Are garden rooms insulated and suitable for year-round use?
Yes, garden rooms are insulated and designed to be suitable for year-round use. They are typically built with materials that provide good insulation and protection from the elements.
  • Can I customise the design and features of my garden room?
Yes, garden rooms can be customised to suit your specific requirements and preferences. You can choose from a range of design options, features, and finishes to create a bespoke garden room that meets your needs.
  • Can garden rooms add value to my property?
Yes, garden rooms can add value to your property, particularly if they are well-designed and built to a high standard. They provide extra living space and can be an attractive feature for potential buyers. The Daily Mail and also Channel 5 both said it can add up to 10% to your property value. Please google and research to see how a Garden Room can be a strong investment for your property.
  • What is the warranty on garden rooms and what does it cover?
In conjunction with our suppliers, we provide guarantees for a period of 10 years. This covers the floor, roof, and timber frame.
  • Will Warmacool reduce ceiling height?
No, ceiling height will remain about the same. The insulation boards are 10mm thick and lie neatly against the exterior panels, fitting perfectly. UPVc panels are also just 10mm thick. So overall there is just 20mm difference which is not noticeable.
  • How long does installation take?
The installation take one working if under 30sqm. If over 30sqm, then two days should be sufficient.
  • Is maintenance required?
No, Warmacool does not need maintenance thanks to its robust, tough materials.
  • Is a warranty provided?
Yes, we provide a 10-year warranty.
  • What does it look like from the outside?
The exterior of your conservatory remains unchanged.
  • What are the roof slates made of?
The Eco Slates are extremely lightweight in comparison with most other options. On average a square metre will weigh less than 12kg.
  • The slates seem very flexible, how do they hold up in strong wind conditions?
The slates have been tested in winds up to 110mph and therefore the wind causes no problem.
  • Does The Colour Fade?
Over the 50 year warranty expect a variable colour change; however the UV Inhibitors ensure they are extremely fade resistant.
  • Do the slates get brittle in the sun?
No, the slates have UV Inhibitors built in them to protect against harmful UV rays.
  • Do you need to use underlay during installation?
Yes, we always use a BBA approved breathable membrane.
  • What fire rating do they have?
Class ‘A’ fire rating; see the specification page for full test certificates.
  • Will there be any noise problems during heavy rain or hail?
No, the slates are solid and not hollow, so the noise is kept at a minimum.
  • How many slates do you get to a square metre?
17 slates on average per square metre for a pitch of 20 degrees. 7 slates per linear metre for valleys and ridges.
  • What guarantee do the slates have?
    The slates have a 50-year non-prorated warranty.
  • If the pitch of my roof is below 20 degrees and needs flashing, how is the slate fitted?
The Eco Slates are very flexible, therefore can be fitted to a vertical, enabling cap flashing to be dressed over it. Ensure flashing lap is sufficient for adequate weatherproofing. For pitches below 20 degrees it is highly recommended to use the Eco Slates for flashing; If not then it is imperative to ensure existing flashing is sealed to the Eco Slates.
  • I don’t have much space will it be worth it?
Stunning conservatories are frequently created in the most unlikely places and a valuable extra room can be built in a previously unused part of a courtyard or garden. Filling an awkward area or dark recess with an attractive functional conservatory, no matter how small, is a great investment particularly when ground space is at a premium.
  • Do I require building control or planning permission for this?
Our conservatory design consultants are experienced in obtaining approval from local planning authorities and can offer advice, at the outset, on what is likely to be permitted. We will gladly facilitate the preparation and submission of all necessary applications.
